New Klang Valley MRT: Sungai Buloh - Kajang Line

A good news to Klang Valley residents

KLANG VALLEY MRT
SUNGAI BULOH – KAJANG LINE
o The MRT Sungai Buloh – Kajang Line is a Mass Rapid Transit line running from Sungai Buloh and cutting through the Kuala Lumpur City Center, before ending at Kajang.

o The Sungai Buloh-Kajang Line will cover a distance of 51 kilometers (of which 9.5km is underground).

o There will be 31 stations planned along the route, to serve a total population of 1.2 million currently inadequately served by rail-based networks. There will be three provisional stations (not built for now, but planned) for future development.

o The MRT Sungai Buloh - Kajang Line is part of the Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit project to provide an integrated and sustainable transport system for the Klang Valley. It was announced by the Government of Malaysia in December 2010 under the Greater Kuala Lumpur / Klang Valley National Key Economic Area as detailed in the Economic Transformation Programme.

o The objective of the project is to increase the number of people using public transport, alleviate traffic congestion and decrease travel time from one destination to another. For example a trip from Kota Damansara to Bukit Bintang which normally takes 45 minutes by car will only take 30 minutes via the MRT. The total time for traveling the entire stretch from Sungai Buloh to Kajang will be approximately 88minutes.

o Travelling by MRT will also be considerably cheaper than owning and driving a car in the Klang Valley. Other benefits of the line would include increased productivity from time saved travelling and an increase in property values along the line.

o Preliminary work on the MRT Sungai Buloh – Kajang line begins with land clearing work at three sites; Sungai Buloh, Semantan and Cochrane. Actual civil works will only commence from November 2011. The project is expected to be completed in 2016. Financing for the project will come entirely from government funds.

o The line, including all 31 stations, will be owned by the Malaysian Government through Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad, the Project Owner, which is 100% owned by the Ministry of Finance Incorporated. Prasarana has appointed RapidKL to operate the MRT network.

- Minimal social impact – Traffic congestion

2. Hotspot analysis (changes/recommendations made to the initial alignment):

Northern Region
i) The northern region Alignment is maintained except for RRI in Sungai Buloh, which changed to serve the future development of RRI and for better integration with the affordable housing development and upcoming Integrated Transport Terminal (ITT).

Central Region
i. Alignment in the Central region is maintained with emphasis towards mitigating noise and visual impact during and post construction stage.

ii. Persiaran Surian – the alignment is maintained in this section and mitigation measures will be implemented to ease the alignment's close proximity to residence, noise and traffic congestion.

iii. Sunsuria Development – in an effort to minimize land acquisition the alignment was tweaked. As a result, only two commercial lots will now be acquired.

iv. Taman Tun Dr Ismail/Damansara Utama (SS20)/Seksyen 17:
- After carefully evaluating the options, the present alignment will be maintained. Mitigation measures will be provided to ease the alignment's proximity to residence, potential noise and traffic congestion.

- However, SPAD has decided to move the TTDI Station to vicinity of Caltex petrol station, combining it with the Section 17 station into a new TTDI Station which is located further away from residential area.
v. Bukit Bandaraya, Bukit Damansara and Jalan Semantan
- The alignment is maintained in this section and mitigation measures will be implemented to ease the alignment's proximity to residence, potential noise and traffic congestion.

vi. Bukit Bintang station
- SPAD has decided to combine two stations (Bukit Bintang East and Bukit Bintang West stations) into one station, Bukit Bintang Central station for better integration with the shopping district and the KL Monorail system.

Southern Region
i. Maluri station
- Involves the land acquisition of a Chinese temple. All parties have reached an amicable solution.
- SPAD will engage with DBKL for its suitable relocation.

ii. Cheras Batu 9 and Batu 10
- The alignment is maintained and will involve residential land acquisition.
- SPAD will ensure proper compensation for land acquisition.

iv) Jalan Cheras (Bkt Dukung – Sg Jernih):
- The Alignment will now run along the Grand Saga highway in an effort to minimize land acquisition. It will still involve residential land acquisition.
- SPAD will ensure that ensure proper compensation for the land acquired.

v) Bandar Kajang:
- Alignment has now been significantly changed away from the town centre to minimize land acquisition to just one building
